Gerald Urquhart
Abstract: In the 1980s, the world watched as Nicaragua’s revolution struggled against US-backed counter-insurgence and imperialism. This talk will focus on how a proposed canal project and a fire in a national park led to a strong anti-Ortega movement, leading Ortega to become an oppressive force with striking similarities to the Somoza regime he helped topple in 1979. Urquhart was one of the leftists who traveled to Nicaragua in support of the Sandinistas to find their new incarnation to grow ever more despotic.
